My body is ready.

Added (20 Oct 2015, 3:37 AM)

I haven't kept up with any of the fan speculations, other than obsessive searching for what species that big huge orange alien is, the one with the jester girl on his lap. (I now believe his name is Grumgarr). But did anyone else get the impression that the guy in the mask may be Luke?

Are you referring to Kylo Ren, Jka-60?

And yes, the latest trailer has put a whole new level of motivation into Star Wars franchise. I can't wait until I see it on December 18th!

I doubt it's Luke, considering Ren's played by Adam Driver and there's production photos of him with the mask off.

Hair in that one brief shot doesn't match Hamill's either

I guess his name is Kylo Ren, yeah. It'd make a pretty good "I am your father" twist though. I just got that vibe when watching the trailer. "I will finish what you started" and the whole modulation to the voice even sort of sounded like Luke to me.

It'd be a twist, sure, though idk how I'd personally feel about it. I think it might undermine the entirety of Luke's arc during the OT. I actually thought it would be interesting if they made it more analogous to Obi-Wan and Anakin in that Kylo Ren is actually someone Luke tried to train who fell to the Dark Side. Either way, s'all speculation until the 17th of December, heh.

Jace, I didn't think you'd show.

Now, in your head, did you read that as "Jace, I didn't think you'd show," or "Jace, I didn't think you'd show"?

I accept and/or forgive either.

This seemed like a good time to make my Episode VII predictions, so on December 19th I can have a thread to point to and show everyone what a smarty pants I am.

First, let's check in with my predictions from when Disney first bought LucasFilm in 2012.

1. The prequels will be ignored.

CORRECT.
There's not been a single reference to the prequels in any of the trailers so far. I also predicted that The Clone Wars TV show would end. So far, there have been a handful of references to prequel characters and events in the Rebels TV show, but considering it's also a Dave Filoni product I think I deserve a pass on that.

2. The Star Wars live-action TV series, Star Wars: Underworld, is doomed.

CORRECT.
Disney was never going to dilute the franchise with a live-action Star Wars show at the same time it's trying to promote a new Star Wars film. I did not foresee the Rebels TV show, however.

3. Episode VII will be a quality film and a crowd pleaser.

CORRECT.
I don't think it's too soon to say this, especially considering everyone's reactions to the trailer. Money quote: "I expect it will respect the original trilogy and borrow heavily from the look and feel of Episodes IV, V, and VI". Remember, at the time people were saying that Episode VII would be John Carter all over again.

4. Nonetheless, Episode VII will take a wrecking ball to the post-Trilogy expanded universe.

CORRECT.
"I doubt Disney will make the effort to navigate two decades of expanded universe content (furthermore, we know that LucasFilm doesn't "consider that Star Wars"). More likely, Disney will disregard the post-Trilogy content and 'reboot' Star Wars with its own, original storyline. This will most likely mean the end of the New Republic, Imperial Remnant, and New Jedi Order as know them."

5. There will be new levels of Star Wars canon.

CORRECT.
#hottake: "The post-Trilogy expanded universe in its current form may be done for, but it won't be dead. More likely, the films—including the new film—will continue to be held as the "highest," or most authoritative version of Star Wars events, but the expanded universe as we know it will be re-classified as a sort of "primary alternate universe." It won't disappear from Wookieepedia, and being 20 years old it will have its supporters, but the new films will eventually surpass the 1990's-2000's content in popularity."

Yeah, that happened.

6. The video game Star Wars: 1313 will be fine.

WRONG!
Little did I know that in over a year of development, all LucasArts ever made was some concept art and basically just a trailer for Star Wars: 1313. As it turned out, there wasn't much to cancel, but canceled it was. But if LucasArts hadn't been completely paralyzed (as we now know that it was), and actually had a somewhat-finished product to show Disney, I don't think they would have canceled it.

7. The principal characters of the original trilogy won't be seen in Episode VII.

WRONG!
Well, I sure was wrong about this one. Let's point and laugh at how wrong I was: "The actors are over 30 years older now, and I doubt Episode VII will take place 30 years after Episode VI." But I was (mostly) correct though in saying: "[T]he characters will be all new—like the prequel characters—and Disney will come up with original adventures for them, only loosely connected to the trilogy, that the writers can exercise full creative control over."

8. There won't be another Jar Jar. At least not in Episode VII.

CORRECT.
The jury is still out on BB-8, but I doubt he or any other character is going to reach Jar Jar-levels of obnoxious pandering to children. "... at least not in Episode VII," was and continues to be my caveat.

So most of my predictions are right (see: "smarty pants" remark above). And now, my Episode VII predictions, largely based on the new trailer:

1. Kylo Ren is not Luke. Let's just get this out of the way first.

2. Some years after Endor, the Imperial Remnant will launch a surprise attack on the New Republic using new and improved laser weapons and reduce the Republic to a remnant of its former self.

3. Finn is a stormtrooper who deserts the First Order, not a Resistance fighter undercover as a stormtrooper.

4. A surprisingly large portion of the movie will be spent on Jakku following Rey's exploits as a junk salvager working either for or against someone named Unkar.

5. The concept art we've seen of an old AT-AT on its side will feature in the film and be Rey's hideout/residence on Jakku.

6. Rey is Han Solo's daughter.

7. ... But probably not Leia's.

8. Han Solo will die.

9. General Hux will die.

10. Captain Phasma will die or be seriously injured.

11. Kylo Ren and Supreme Leader Snoke will not die.

12. The mechanical hand reaching out to touch R2 isn't Luke, it's Finn.

13. BB-8 speaks English and belongs to Poe Dameron.

14. Luke appears in the film, but only briefly and towards the end. (Bonus prediction: He will die in Episode VIII).

15. Someone will say, "I have a bad feeling about this."

16. The credits will say "Very Special Thanks to George Lucas."

17. There will be a Wilhelm Scream.

That's about all I got. We're only 2 months away and still nobody has any idea what the First Order really is, or the Resistance for that matter. The trailer doesn't give much away, which is another great thing about it. But I feel good about my predictions, and this time we won't have to wait 3 years to see if I'm right or wrong.

I share the feeling that Han Solo will die, also. If not in Ep. VII, definitely in one of the following two films.

Just for jizz and giggles, I dredged up some old quotes from certain persons three years ago on the subject of Episode VII.

"May providence have mercy on our souls."
—Jamie

"You know what, I don't want to see an aging Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fischer or Billy Dee Williams fighting Droids or Clones. Equally, I don't want to see the Franchise "Re-imagined" with continuity issues surrounding new characters."
—Jamie

"I'm giving up Star Wars."
—Havoc (and he did!)

"We are so fucked."
—Adam

"Ugh, please just let Star Wars be."
—Karth

"This is gonna suck."
—Karth

Tee hee hee.

To be quite fair, I'd imagine it was the bad taste the prequels left in a lot of mouths that brought about reactions like that. While the verdict is still out for a month and change though -- it looks like they are really working on something good. (Im just as, if not more excited for Rogue One)

Well yeah. At the time we had very little knowledge of what exactly was happening, and I was expecting it to suck. I've since changed my tune, gosh dangit I'm a human being with emotions and opinions okay I mean I know I'm not perfect but--

Ahem, I mean. Yeah, I changed my opinion.

My opinion is still the same.

Also, holy fuck, Jace. You live. So do all you other folks (except for Jamie, apparently). Where the fuck
y'all been? Why does nobody come and hang out any more?

Also. I've taken the 18th off to see Star Wars. Who is coming with me?

I just don't get why so many people are rabidly insistent that Luke is Kylo Ren. No. Just no.

Now for my opinion...

I think this trailer makes Episode VII seem to be the most Star Wars thing to happen to Star Wars since Star Wars. It lines up with the previous trailers, and I think it's a good thing. They really tapped into Episode IV for this. Why? Because it needed to be familiar, it needed to be the Star Wars everyone knows and loves, from casual to hardcore fans. There's a ridiculous amount of fan service going into the film though for the hardcore fans.

Some examples of this: the X-Wings, known as T-70s, are styled very similarly to the visual design featured late into Legends for the XJ X-Wings. The First Order's Star Destroyer is very Ansel Hsaio style, and I would love to find out if he was hired into the project (which would be an amazing story). The story is about the original cast in their older years (potential featuring their children), a la NJO and later novels. Finn is having a full-blown nerveous breakdown it seems throughout the film, as if you picked up Joe Cchmoe off the street and threw him into Star Wars (that's a personal service to me really). I'm running out of clear examples here, but let's not forget the most import fan service of all that appears to be coming out of this - this is a serious, mature Star Wars film.

Could my own assertions here be wrong? Absolutely. It's Star Wars. We're one of the most fucked over fan bases on the planet. Why do I think I'm not wrong that this will be an epic, awesome, amazing movie that pumps new life into Star Wars? Because they know that we're the most fucked over fan base on the planet, and they seem to have a legitimate drive, as fans themselves, to do right by us. How do I know this? Because Lucas couldn't walk the fuck away... he went up to them offering his help, and they flat out turned him down. Among other reasons, but I'm too tired to list them and I just want everyone to know that George Lucas was rejected from a Star Wars film.

My own prediction: One of the characters in Rogues One is going to be Biggs. How can he look like a clone of the actor in that cast shot and not be him.

Seeing it on the 17th.

(Neener neener etc).

But yeah, I'm not dead. I'm pining for the fjords.

... and for RP!

I've involved my union peripherally in my workplace troubles. I've learned that my store has a history of working its people to death rather than hiring anyone new unless pressure is brought to bear from above. I can't bring pressure from above, but taking a page from the velociraptor, I can from the side. Stay tuned.

Also, Jamie is around. Jess is on vacation. Jaron is doing his finals.
