I've been reading Bloodline, set 6 years before The Force Awakens, and it has some more useful world-building information I thought I'd share for RP purposes.

- The Hutt Cartel collapsed after Jabba's death, and Hutt Space became a "wild west" of other species (especially former slave species of the Hutts such as Nikto and Klatooinians) asserting themselves in the absence of the Hutt Cartel. As of the novel (at least, about 1/3rd of the way through it), a Nikto Cartel is the most prominent criminal faction, run by a Nikto named Rinnrivin Di. He is accused of strong-arming Twi'lek merchants into paying protection money, but insists his long-enslaved species just wants to enjoy the economic opportunities that other species have.

- Mon Mothma was Chancellor for a long time until she became ill, perhaps mortally so. (This is probably an homage to the Jedi Academy Trilogy books in which Mon Mothma is poisoned, becomes gravely ill, and has to retire as Chief of State). Mon Mothma held the Senate together with the force of her personality, but afterwards the Senate becomes dysfunctional, divided into bickering factions that can't agree on anything.

- These factions are the Centrists and Populists. They're referred to several times as a "party," as in, a political party. The Centrists favor strong, Imperial-style government. The Populists fear the rise of another Empire and want planets to govern themselves. There are extremists in both factions; the Centrists tend to be better-organized, and the Populists have a right-wing fringe that believes in conspiracy theories about the Centrists and doesn't want any galactic government.

- The Chancellor doesn't preside over the Senate like he does in the prequels. Instead, the Senate sessions are more efficiently moderated by droids.

- The Senate office complex on Hosnian was built to be all one floor, rather than a skyscraper, to avoid having a hierarchy in which planets are placed higher or lower than one another. The result is a massive building with offices sometimes a kilometer apart from one another, with moving sidewalks for Senators to travel the distance more quickly. There's also a large, recently-dedicated statue of Bail Organa on the grounds, and there's a massive, pyramidal hanging gardens nearby.

- Luke and Ben are training in an undisclosed location outside of communications range. Even Leia doesn't know where they are. Han runs his own shipping company but spends most of his time as a judge in a famous ship racing competition.

That's it so far. Some of this is likely to change as the book goes on and I'll update it if so. For instance, Rinnrivin Di is a large player in the book and who knows if he and his Nikto cartel will be by the end. And part of the story involves a proposal to create a "First Senator" position, which is a Senator elected to have more power to cut through the Senate dysfunction and get things done.
