An Idea for the RP

So, I've noticed in the past that each and every player has their own mini-SL (storyline) going on, doing their own thing and whatnot, but
that's not really enough to power along the greater story. Instead, we
end up with a bunch of OOC arguments, half-completed posts and, in the
end, burned-out writers and the site dies.

So I'd like to propose an idea for Management to implement, if they feel they are able to do
so. It is something I saw at the last (chat-based) RP I was at, but it
worked to keep the place alive for a long time: objectives.

Once a month (if possible, or at a frequency devised by management), a new
'objective' will come out for each faction (Rebel, Imperial,
Independent, etc.) These goals could be as simple as 'The Rebels must
create a supply line from planet X to planet Y without being disrupted,'
or 'The Imperials must smash rebel base or infiltrate Rebel cell at
such-and-such a place.' Naturally, either side could try and cut the
other off at the knees, if they had reason to do so, or perhaps even a
mutually inclusive objective such as: 'Imperials must pacify planet X
and Rebels must resist or reinforce planet X.'

Now, the success (or failure) of these challenges, would reflect via the 'news' board and have actual impact on the RP.

Either way, the addition of actual goals would be something to give players an actual purpose.

It's a good idea, let me say that first. But I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that, in my opinion, things are going fantastically in the RP right now. There are plots happening in the RP that are some of the most promising I've seen in my years of RP. I've also come to appreciate how really, really good at RP everyone here is, especially Jaron, Davon, and Jess lately. It's a delight to read their posts and I'm enjoying watching their characters develop.

Of course, there have been "OOC arguments, half-completed posts and... burned-out writers" in the past, but it should be noted that, so far at least, there's been none of that here at Will of the Force. So, I strongly dispute that your proposal is necessary at this time, but it's still an interesting idea. In fact, I have an entire system of objectives and rewards that's ready to be implemented in WotF if it's something we want to do.

Without going into too much detail (because it's me, naturally there are a lot of details), here's an example of how it would work: Bothan spies (or Imperial probe droids, depending on your faction) would locate an Imperial supply convoy (or a Rebel base, if you're an Imperial character), and the player who destroys the convoy or the base is rewarded with upgrades to their ships, such as a single-use cloaking device or a towed gravity well projector, or probe droids to locate additional Rebel bases (or Bothan spies to locate Imperial convoys) to win even more upgrades or other rewards, such as a 5- or 6-ship fleet rather than the standard 4, or custom technology items that wouldn't otherwise be approved. Thus the outcome of these small battles would actually be consequential for players.

However, I've not implemented that system as of yet because, so far, everyone is doing a great job coming up with interesting motivations for their characters without management having to dangle rewards in front of them. I'm still open to the idea, but it just hasn't seemed necessary thus far. But if I sense that most of you want to make it happen, we can make it happen.

Adding onto that, I agree with Jace that it's not a bad idea, though I'll caution that I think it might incentivize people to treat RP as a win/loss sort of scenario rather than what it actually is, which is collaborative storytelling. I think a lot of the problems we've had in the past can be avoided now if we try and avoid turning RP into a proverbial pissing contest.
