| So, Jace suggested that, since I picked up the Force Awakens Visual Dictionary, I should start compiling a list of info on the new post-Endor setting. I figured that the rest of you have probably ingested some of the other canon material and I'm hoping we can all start filling in some blanks as more stuff trickles in. I'll post anything I find interesting or relevant. This is also a major work in progress so it'll (hopefully) be constantly updated as we learn more.

NEW CANON MAP
ORGANIZATIONS
The New Republic
"Following its great victory against the Empire at the Battle of Endor, the Alliance to Restore the Republic rebranded itself as the New Republic, and shortly afterward a peace treaty—the Galactic Concordance—was signed with the remnants of the Empire. Believing that the Empire was no longer a threat, the New Republic turned its attention to reshaping galactic politics."

-The New Republic exists as a struggling governmental body formed in the wake of the Empire's defeat. The initial capital world of the Republic was Chandrila, being Mon Mothma's home planet, though the New Republic's capital world actually changes every few years. The most recent planet to 'host' the New Republic was Hosnian Prime, which is the world we see destroyed in Episode VII. It is confirmed that the New Republic's chancellor and Senate were on the planet and were obliterated.
-The New Republic was largely demilitarized following the defeat of the Empire, the remnants of which fled into the Unknown Regions. Since the Imperials were thought largely defeated, the majority of the standing military was disbanded and defense of the new government was left to one fleet. This fleet was caught in the destruction from Starkiller Base firing on Hosnian Prime and was also wiped out, by-and-large. This is also indicated by Ackbar in the movie itself.
-The Resistance, despite the name, isn't so much a full-fledged resistance in that it's fighting against an oppressor. The First Order emerged in the years leading up to The Force Awakens and have begun attacking worlds on the Outer Rim, worlds that the New Republic is hesitant to aid for fear of being drawn into another all-out war. It's implied in both the Visual Dictionary and the movie novelization that the Republic has struggled to establish itself as legitimate, with many worlds still missing the Empire and the leadership it provided. Thus, it's really sort of toothless in that it's powerless to do much against the First Order. To combat this, the Resistance was formed by Leia Organa as a way to counter the First Order's attacks.
-The Chancellor of the Republic at the time of the Hosnian attack was a Tarsunt named Lanever Villecham. He was in the second year of his first term as Chancellor (the new Republic eliminated the 'Supreme' from that title). His policies focused on forging trade agreements with the Mid Rim and he was not worried at all about the First Order, declaring that so long as they were contained and following the terms of the Galactic Concordance, they were not a threat.
-At current it's unclear what's to become of the Republic in this new canon. It's implied that with their fleet destroyed and governing body decimated, it won't be able to resist the First Order well at all.
The Resistance
"The Resistance is a small private force created by Princess Leia Organa to keep watch on the movements of the First Order. Though she petitions the New Republic government for support, she finds the politics of the Senate too slow and too mired in self-interest to be of any help. The New Republic tolerates the Resistance, though it is wary of making war with the First Order."

-Formed by Leia Organa in response to the aggression shown by the First Order, the Resistance is similar to the Rebel Alliance in that it is under-funded and under-manned. Their primary attack force is a few squadrons of donated T-70 X-Wing fighters, and possess a small fleet of capital ships, including the famous Home One. They are unofficially supported by the New Republic (insofar as the New Republic acknowledges their legitimacy and hasn't tried to stop them, yet) but they are mostly supported by donors and sympathizers and are made up of volunteers from the New Republic military, fledgling as it is.
-Their primary base is located on D'Qar, though in the novelization it is implied that there are other, smaller outposts located across the galaxy. D'Qar is a verdant world located in the Ileenium System, and it is ringed by an asteroid field.
-The Resistance is staffed by numerous veterans of the Galactic Civil War, including veterans such as Nien Nunb and Gial Ackbar. Undermanned as they are, soldiers often pull double-duty as both infantry and base staff, it's implied that the Resistance is far smaller and less-funded than even the Rebel Alliance was.
-The novel implies that the force they sent to attack Starkiller Base (which amounted to two X-Wing squadrons, Red and Blue) made up a large portion of what military strength they had. That speaks to an extremely under-powered military force. First Order
"The Galactic Concordance defanged the Empire's ability to wage war, with strict disarmament treaties and punishing reparations. The Old Empire withered away, becoming a remnant of political hardliners locked in a cold war with the New Republic, before eventually breaking away to reform in the Unknown Regions as the mysterious First Order."

-The First Order is a military junta formed out of the shattered remains of the Imperial military and its surviving officers. They have spent the last 30 years rebuilding and redoubling their efforts to emerge as a stronger, more unified force. While they lack the sheer manpower of the Empire, they are far more fanatical in their approach to discipline and loyalty, so much so that Finn's change of heart and subsequent defection are seen as improbable and borderline-heretical.
-Soldiers within First Order space (which seems to largely be in the Unknown Regions) are taken forcibly from their parents as infants and are indoctrinated into a life of service, brainwashed wholly into thinking the First Order is a benign and ethical power intent on bringing civility and stability back to a galaxy overrun with terrorists. They seem to be a pretty overt analogue to both the Third Reich and modern-day North Korea.
-They appear to be well-funded, considering Starkiller Base would have been a tremendously expensive undertaking. On the whole their technological advantage over the Republic seems pretty severe. Starkiller Base is not their primary planet nor their capital, and in the novel it is stated that the First Order is widespread enough to have a large, powerful fleet and military.
-The command base of the Supreme Leader, Snoke, is purposefully mobile and its location a secret.
The Jedi
-It is still unclear as to how large and far-reaching the extend of Luke's new Jedi academy was. My personal assumption is that it was rather small, and if I had to place bets on its location I would guess Devaron. In the new canon, Luke travels to the abandoned Jedi temple on Devaron and learns from a number of training remotes and the like there, all of this taking place in the three-year gap between A New Hope and Empire.

| (I hope you don't me jumping in and this being a collaborative process of everyone pooling together what they know. I have just a couple of tidbits that might be of use).
I'm not sure it's stated conclusively that the New Republic's capital changes on a regular basis. It was Chandrila at one point (c. 6 months post-Endor) but it was Hosnian Prime as of 6 ABY and my guess it that it remained Hosnian Prime for the next 30 years.
('Why not Coruscant?' is a fun question to ponder. I wonder if it was wrecked in a battle with Imperial remnants, or if the Imperials wrecked it themselves on their way out as the Nazis were supposed to do to Paris (but the Nazi governor refused; Mas Amedda might not have any such reservations).
Star Wars: Aftermath floats the idea of most of the New Republic military being disbanded; this does indeed occur in the Military Disarmament Act. But Mon Mothma also discusses having "rapid response" task forces to help keep the peace. I'm guessing this fleet's home base is the Hosnian system and it just sends out task forces occasionally to stomp out brush fires. Also safe to assume the "cherished fleet" (per General Hux) is largely ceremonial with most of the Rebellion-era class having retired and the new hands having no experience of war.
In addition to attacking Outer Rim worlds, there is mounting evidence that the First Order has been launching incursions into New Republic space, across the neutral region known as the "Borderlands." The New Republic doesn't want to hear this and the Senate Intelligence Committee suppresses the reports. This quote gives you a good idea of the New Republic's perspective:
Quote "The Senate Intelligence Committee has reviewed the reports and has found them inconclusive, at best grossly overstated, Poe. This is a non-issue. It's a big galaxy. The First Order is a remnant born of a war thirty years gone. Yes, they persist, yes, they continue, but by all accounts they do so barely. They are, at best, an ill-organized, poorly equipped, and badly funded group of loyalists who use propaganda and fear to inflate their strength and their importance."
He later says "We don't engage the First Order. We don't provoke the First Order."
Here's a useful quote from Before the Awakening to back up what you said about the First Order being fanatical:
Quote "There were mandatory morale sessions twice a day, when everyone was required to stop what they were doing and direct their attention to the nearest holoprojector to watch a recorded speech from High Command, most often from General Hux himself. Those would be interspersed with news feeds showing the deplorable conditions throughout the Republic: the famines on Ibaar and Adarlon, the brutal suppression of the population of Balamak, the unchecked alien advances throughout the Outer Rim. There would always be at least one story to follow about a First Order victory, the liberation of a labor camp on Iktotch or a fleet battle in the Bormea sector."
Here's another quote, same source, about the astropolitics of the New Republic and First Order:
Quote "A display showed the galaxy, color overlays marking realms of political influence. Their position at the Republic base in Mirrin Prime was marked by a gently pulsing gold dot at sea in the royal blue that represented the New Republic's sphere of influence. It stretched far and wide, from the Inner Core to great swaths of the Outer Rim. A gray band designated the neutral region of the Borderland, and beyond that was a pocket of crimson, First Order territory."
Finally, the Resistance does have capital ships, although none we see in the actual movie. It still has Home One, for instance, and another retrofitted Mon Cal cruiser called the Echo of Hope.
The First Order has a large number of new ships, among them the Nebulon K (which might also be used by the New Republic), the Maxima-A heavy cruiser, the Dissident-class light cruiser, and the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer of which the Finalizer is one of several. They also have Civil War-era Imperial-class Star Destroyers although the novelization describes them as antiquated.Added (24 Dec 2015, 10:06 PM) --------------------------------------------- Why do I know all this? I'm a private investigator. I deal in information. Added (24 Dec 2015, 10:06 PM) --------------------------------------------- Also I like the new Republic logo. Added (24 Dec 2015, 10:17 PM) --------------------------------------------- If the New Republic extends to the Inner Core, it's a bit odd that the First Order touts its naval victory in the Bormea Sector considering that's in the Core Worlds.
Also I'm guessing that First Order territory, described as "a pocket of crimson" on the Outer Rim, is probably similar to if not identical to the Imperial Remnant from the Essential Atlas (see here), the difference being that it extends into Unknown Space. But that's just my theory.

| I'm wondering if I should source all this information, since it's scattered across the new canon in bits. The Visual Dictionary is helping a lot with the political framework that the movie didn't have the time or inclination to show. Also thinking I'll do sections for the major movie characters, since they add good context to their actions in the film.
